Functions of the Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities invites you to become a part of a worthwhile project that enhances the chances for independence and full integration into society for outstanding students with disabilities. The Commission has functioned under several names since 1947. The current Commission was established by the enactment of ACT 911 in 1985. ACT 911 requires that thirteen or more of the twenty-five (25) members be individuals with disabilities.

The Commission is committed to:
Strengthening communication and cooperation between various disability groups.
Increasing the effectiveness of policy and program development regarding persons with disabilities.
Promoting full integration and participation of persons with disabilities.

At least 50% of the membership must be disabled. The Governor's Commission was established in 1947 by GovernorBen Laney at the request of President Harry S. Truman. The current Commission was established in 1985 to advocate for the rights and participation of persons with disabilities in Arkansas. The Commission membership is representative of all disabilities. Members are appointed by the Governor with 50% or more made up of individuals with disabilities.
